Businesses are always looking at ways of making their workplaces an all-round happier, relaxing and more productive place for themselves and their workers. One way to achieve this is through not giving extra income or incentives, or even a comfy break area...but through Pets.
It's not uncommon to have pets in the workplace, someone may bring them for their own health and well-being or because they haven't been able to make the necessary arrangements for care during working hours. Following on from Love Your Pet Day on February 20th, National Bring Your Dog To Work day on 22nd of June shows how pupular our furry friends are. It may seem like a distraction, but there really are benefits to this for everyone:
Boosting Morale & Lowering Stress
It's no secret - our pets love us. There's always a feeling of unconditional love from our pets, especially Dogs - they don't care if you have made a mistake, or you are grumpy because that email didn't send - they love you anyway. The International Journal of Workplace Health Management noted in 2012 that the levels of cortisol (your body's main stress hormone) was lower in people that had spent the day with a dog, compared to those who hadn't. Additionally, the process of petting and stroking a dog has been proven to reduce stress - and they'll never say no to the attention!
Getting Up & Out
If you have a Dog in the office, the chances are that they're going to want to stretch their legs at some point in the day, particularly if you are not blessed with a lot of space for them to roam and investigate.
Studies have shown that Dog walkers will walk 79% further than non-dog walkers and it's a great opportunity to get away from the desk and take the dog out (and yourself!) for some exercise. This not only aids physical fitness but also helps with mental clarity and in turn productivity.
Keep your Employees In Work!
No, we aren't suggesting the lack of a Dog, (or any pet) means letting the staff go - we mean their own health! If there is less stress overall, the overall health of the staff will improve and hopefully lead to less absenteeism. Dog-friendly workplaces increase job satisfaction, which then improves employee retention.
At JPA we often have a dog in the office: our very own Red! She keeps us company and in turn, our morale up. She gets treated like a Queen, has her own red beanbag and we love to see her whenever she shows up - always happy to meet and greet staff and visitors – she has her own fans on social media! All she asks for in return is a bit of fuss and maybe some of your lunch given half a chance and she's happy!
We may not be able to help you with your pet at work, but we can help you with any other element of your workspace to help improve your productivity and overall wellness – we’ll do all of it in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner as well!
